Problem Automatic Gear Box

I have a 1998 VW Passat 2L Automatic - An ongoing problem in engaging reverse gear has finally resulted in the gear box not engaging in reverse. You can feel the 'bonk' of it engaging in the gear stick, but the engine just revs as you try to reverse. All other gears work perfectly well.
The car has been well looked after and has done approx 160,000 miles.

Any ideas? Please

Check the connecting rod for reverse gear, you may have to get the car of Stands to check this, "SAFTEY IN MIND" make sure the car is chocked, in park, & remove the IGN KEY.
