Mm Links June 2013 Week 4

This time last year I had been back from the other side of the world for about six weeks, leaving the tropical rainfall of northern Australia and the blistering heat of Singapore for the grey skies and occasional warmth of an English summer.
This year, here in Britain, we have had a couple of weeks of blue skies, albeit with clouds, and a certain amount of warm sunshine, but whatever happened to spring? Having arranged to meet up with my family on the Isle of Man towards the end of March I could not have anticipated that by then the snow would still be thick on the ground and my train journey across from east to west to reach Manchester airport would necessitate the train trundling through high walls of packed snow on either side of the carriage and even being forced to stop at a "red for danger" sign just after Sheffield.
When eventually I reached the outskirts of Manchester, it was doubtful if my flight would leave and even when its arrival in the airport was confirmed, those getting off it were full of doom and gloom about all the roads on the Island being closed because of snow, and 15,000 sheep and lambs being buried alive. Nice! But I made it there, and back again a week later in one piece, if somewhat traumatised.
Now, I have a so-called "summer" holiday to look forward to, again with my family, but this time down in Cornwall, of which more next week.
