Which way are you supposed to fasten your belt?

I dont know if this is the right place for this but hey ho. Which way are you supposed to fasten your belt? Should the bit that you've just fastened and pulled through go towards your left or right? I've always thought it didnt matter but now im wondering if there's one way for men and one way for women.

well I pull the bit through to my left. primarily this is because I'm right handed, and so find it eaasier to do buckle with right hand while pulling thru bit with left. (if that makes sense). I'm female but don't really care if there's a male or female way, I just do what suits. I guess it's kind of like "which wrist do you wear your watch on?", folk may just have a preference for one over the other.

I dont think it really matters what side you fasten it to, but lots of buckles have names on them which would look stupid upside down and i think most of these fasten to your left :-)

there was a similar question on another page.

the answer was in olden days men were dressed by servants and buttons and belts were right to left while women dressed themselves left to right.

hope that makes sense as I've never been so lucky to have someone dress me since I was a kid when my mother dressed me

I'm a man and have always fastened my belt to the right although I can't remember why.

Out of interest does anyone know why mens and ladies buttons are on the opposite side?
