'All the food in supermarkets have a markup price to help pay for wages yet they want YOU to scan and pack'
they also use good business practise and factor in the cost of the rent/rates/lighting and heating and other trading essentials, it's called 'running a business' lol
The introduction of self service check outs is actually to keep staffing costs down (the biggest controlable cost to any retailer) and people lost their jobs, took reduced hours, if they go wrong blame online trading for creating competition.

Mojo-Jo-Jo, for lightweight items such as you describe, don't just lightly place the item down, but sharply knock the shelf (ie scales) on which they're placed. This will let the till's computer know that an item has definitely been scanned through.
Another thing I do is to scan everything through without pausing, then pack my bags when its all paid for. That tip was given to me by an assistant at my local supermarket. I find that less assistance is required using this method.

Would gladly patronise small independent businesses if they were available.
Fabulous greengrocer, good bakery, no butcher, fishmomger, cobbler, deli.
Local co-op seems to be deteriorating by the week. Many lines no longer stocked. If I have to get a bus for a fifteen minute journey into town to get what I need I may as well do my complete shop there and avoid the co-op. Will still walk to the geengrocer and bakery.
