Cash Refund

Bought a T shirt (�9.99) yesterday & paid cash. Same old story - tried it on when I got home & it doesn''t look right. Anyway took it back today (tags still on & receipt in hand) & was told no refund on cash sales, only credit notes. Argued the case for a while but got the same answer from everyone. Surely I can get my money back? This is a well know sports shop & I've not accepted the credit note yet.

If you mean that it has three arms, for example, then it is not "fit for the purpose" and under the various Sales of Goods Acts you are entitled to a full refund (or replacement/repair/credit note if you prefer) of a faulty item.
However, if you mean that it doesn't look as good on you as you thought it would then you are not entitled to a refund but it is often the case that a retailer, as an act of goodwill, offers to accept the returned item in exchange for a credit note.

Most shops will give you your money back if, when you get home, you change your mind about the goods. And of course, as kempie says, if it is faulty they HAVE to give you a refund. Try writing to their Head Office and send a copy of your bill - keep the original - this usually works. Or send the item with the original bill - and keep a copy yourself - to Head Office, Customer Service Supervisor, recorded delivery. Nine times out of ten, you will get a refund that way by cheque. If that doesn't work you will have to shop elsewhere next time but accept a credit note.
Cash refunds or any kind of refund if something is unsuitable is a customer service facility, not a right. Stores vary their policy, why do people think they can buy something take it home, keep it at home for a bit then return it and expect someone else to then buy it and keep it? Would you want to buy a t shirt someone else had taken home and kept in their house for a couple of weeks? me neither.
The law states that a refund is only a must if the product is faulty/irreplaceable. I would have checked there refunds disclaimer which they have to have displayed behind the counter or on the back of the reciept. I work for a company who offers an exchange or gift vouchers as there return policy only.
from experience, go back and ask them where this policy is written, if it aint on the back of your receipt orin view in the store...then demand your money back. Same thing happended to me, I asked them where this policy was and it was not anywhere to be seen. I soon got my money back. If all else fails write to head office and state that this a contravention and you will let trading standards and watchdog know about it.
