Rewiring A House

This house was built in 1952. It needs rewiring, I'm sure, as the wiring is from that time. Is there a rough and ready way of working out approximately how much that will cost; cost of labour per hour, materials etc; or am I reduced to getting quotes and 'flying blind' with no basic idea?

As a comparison FP ......a three bed semi with 30 outlets..i.e.sockets,lights,cooker etc in a house with good channels,good access,t+g flooring...no downlights..moulded accessories will cost around £3800 +vat towards the south and £2800 +vat towards the north.

I know His Brightness is on the case Fred, but it does depend on a number of things.
I'm only butting because I'm re-wiring a 3-bed semi right now. The house is being renovated, so it's completely empty. That does reduce the price.

How likely is it that the contractor will have to lift floorboards on the ground floor? These are strip Japanese oak (you can tell the house is just post war; Japanese oak was dirt cheap!) and one floor is a sprung, oak, dance floor. Don't fancy the standard contractor lifting those. Upstairs is deal flooring, standard t and g, so no problem.

If the ground floor sockets are fed from below then you may have to channel out for the new wiring from above and make good.Switch wires generally come from above so you should be ok.
