old eighties series mans name about a mentally ill person

cant remember the name of the series but i remember some of the scenes.it was about a retarded man possibly in his thirties whos mother dies and he goes through a series of mishaps(not funny).in one episode he is in a derelict house chasing pigeons and falls through the floorboards ,in another he is in a mental hospital and the patients are all trying false teeth from a bowl to find some that fit.thats as imuch as i remember.

This was 'Walter' starring Sir Ian McKellan. It was originally a one off play transmitted on Channel 4's opening night in 1982. Critical reaction was so good they commissioned a sequel.
