Very enjoyable. I found the missing word harder to find than one would think but all done now. Might have a bash at CAM 69 by Schadenfreude now - that should be a challenge.

It took me a while to get going in this one but thankfully I discovered the word to be highlighted and this gave me access to the rest of the grid. In the end a pleasant puzzle but seemed tricky -- lots of tough clues and one or two very well-hidden misprints! Thanks Oxymoron.

Devadolly's nemesis again but I feel that she will find this accessible. It must be the quickest I have ever finished one of Oxymoron's. It helped that I have used the quote in a quiz before now.

For some reason I thought Oxymoron & Schadenfreude was the same setter
in different publications?

Some tricky clues & misprints - very enjoyable puzzle.

As you say novalis, I did groan when I saw the name but either my O is getting kinder in his old age, or my brain worked slightly better than usual because I have managed all the grid apart from the two unclued answers which are confusing me.

I hope it's not giving too much away to say that the unclued answers are those to whom the thematic quote is referring.

You're doing better than me, Devadolly. After a good start I've ground to a halt over four clues in the bottom right hand corner, and no idea re. the quote either, despite searches based on its first three letters. I have some ideas for 19) and 22) down but can't link them to the cryptic parts of the clue.

It always helps my brain to post on here - I now have the quote and therefore a confirmation of the two unclued answers. Just need to get these last clues sorted.

Well, completed grid etc. but still not worked out the reasoning behind the cryptic parts of 19 and 22 down.

I'm struggling with a couple. 1d. Using crossword solver and Chambers word wizard, I can only find one word to fit the letters in the grid, but it doesn't really fit the clue. I'm sure my existing letters are correct. Once I've got this it might help me get 17a.

Cloverjo, the definition of 1 down is given in the first four words.
For 17 across find the genus name for horse chestnut and cut it in half.

Kayakamina, they could well be the same setter. Very interesting if they are - do you know that for a fact? I'm not very well up on the who's who of setters. If they are one and the same Schadenfreude is aptly named although both are tricky. As far as Cam 69 goes I'm struggling despite having most of the answers.

Thank you Jim 360, n o sooner had I posted than I had a PDM, via the suspected 11a and much to my amazement have actually completed a Mr O Xword!!!!! He is definately getting kinder in his old age!
Like you Christina, I haven't worked out some of the word play but 22d use Red as an indicator.
