The symbol λ can mean wavelength.
The lengths 75mm and 150mm are very short wavelengths.
i was thinking the answer could be short wave radio but as these are so rare nowadays I didn't reply.
But it's just come to me -microwave.

You're welcome sp, I was given an OS Atlas of UK years ago, maps out of date now but the references don't change.

Thank you all. I would never have got the symbol in a million years!! Don't quite understand the sink or plug hole ...why dragging me down?

I'm not totally sure.
Maybe dragging down suggests you sink.
Certainly water goes down in a spiral.
I did think of a spiral staircase but 'spiral' is already in the clue so wouldn't be in the answer as well.
I also thought it may be something to do with carpets (I used to like the band the Inspiral Carpets who were sometimes called the Inspirals) but that doesn't explain the 'dragging me down'
