Mm And Km Links July 2013 Week [1]

Last Sunday, I announced an invitation to Ulysses100 to set the MM Links for July.

Ulysses100 didn't play week 5 and didn't log in to AB for over a week suggesting he was on holiday.
BUT. . . did he finally make contact?
Find out tomorrow in Q&P at 8:45am when the MM Link scoreboards are wiped and a new month of challenges begins. The challenge words themselves will be declared at 9:00 sharp. You will have until 7pm Sunday to register your responses but the earlier you play, the greater the chance of claiming a bonus point. Bonus points remain on offer for just two minutes after each correct link is discovered.
One point for each correct guess or two points if within the 2-minute bonus window. A further 2 points for a clean sweep of all four answers.

A fresh start also tomorrow for the KM Links game overseen by seekeerz. That is based on the Daily Telegraph GK Crosswords (set by Kate Mepham, hence 'KM'). Play anytime before midnight on Sunday for an equal chance of points.
Points awarded in that game are 1, 3, 6 or 10 points for 1, 2, 3 or 4 correct matches respectively.


In the shrubbery, the butterflies have been boosted by the hatching of some ringlets.

I also expected some burnet moths which usually emerge about the same time but none in evidence so far. Lots of little brown birds (LBJs) around as usual but I am beginning to recognise the whitethroats a little more easily. One down 'N' to go.

Looking in briefly while they close the roof on centre court....

Our butterfly population is much reduced again this year. At its peak (1976, if you remember that!) we had 26 different varieties in the garden, and the buddleia was covered. This year I've had 6 different species but only one of each.

Tearinghair, You must live near some open countryside to get that many species to visit. My town garden has only attracted a total of 7 species in over 30 years (4 Nymphalidae and 3 Pieridae).

I knew as soon as I'd pressed Submit that I'd used the wrong word.... of course I didn't mean that, but then '26 different butterflies' wouldn't have been right either as there were certainly several hundred all told.
I can't remember all of the different ones now - I wrote them down at the time - but they included orange tip, brimstone, peacock, small tortoiseshell. large tortoiseshell, comma. red admiral, large white, small white, meadow brown, ringlet, speckled wood, holly blue, small copper, clouded yellow, painted lady and a fritillary.

We are not far from a local park, much of which is left fairly wild.
