Downloading In Internet Explorer

For a while now I haven't been able to download anything using Internet Explorer. I just get an empty 'New Tab' at the top of the screen. Someone suggested I may have inadvertently hit an f key with another key to cause this. Is this likely, and does anyone know how I can fix it? (Using Google Chrome meantime but I like IE.)

Is your Internet Explorer an up-to-date version?.

You could try resetting IE.
Go to Internet Options - Advanced and choose Reset.
One option allows you to reset the browser without loosing your personal data.
