Caravan Insurance

just bought a caravan and insured it yesterday. picking up the caravan on friday and we will be off for the weekend down south. If something bad happened and i was in an accident, would my car insurance be valid or would the insurance company say, i should have informed them that i was towing a caravan before i set out, and use it to opt out of paying.

sammo, I have no experience of caravans, but some experience of insurance companies. I would definitely inform them that you will be towing, as I think this is a "relevant detail". If you examine your current car policy terms as it stands, it may even exclude towing at present.

You need to check your car insurance policy. My policies, over many years, have always covered me for towing a trailer/caravan but yours may be different depending on your age and driving record.
If you have breakdown insurance for the car it's always worth checking that it covers the caravan as well in case of recovery - not much point having the car taken to your destination in case of serious breakdown if the caravan has to be left.

Hi, further to the other replies, some insurance companies require to be informed if a 'tow-bar' is fitted, whether used or not, as it is classed as a 'vehicle modification'. Have you bought an antipitch ' damper ' like towsure to assist towing safety?

Hi again, where I said 'damper' a really should have said stabiliser, two makes come to mind 'Bulldog' and SnakeMaster' although there are many others, look up stabilisers on Camping and Caravan site

Certainly inform the insurance or they will turn down any claim !
And while your at it, let your breakdown company know too or you will have your caravan sitting at the side of the road until you can get it yourself... not good.
