I am a very active, sociable 72 year old but find it difficult to hear with any sort of background noise going on. Can hearing aids cure this or do they only make things louder? Anyone experienced this or recently had a hearing aid?

I had one a few months ago for my left ear, and it certainly does help. It was free on the NHS and very small, so not a problem to wear.
I don't have a hearing aid.

No, hearing aids magnify sound, both wanted and unwanted sound, so no it will not cut out background noise.
My gran did find that hearing aids seemed to accentuate background noise and kept taking hers out. However, i know several people that have hearing aids and they seem to get used to them.
According to my OH his digital aid does still get the background noise but you cope with it better as you can hear the nearer sounds clearer if that makes sense. He hears so much better now he has his and better for me lol as I don't have to shout.
Hearing aids cannot cut out background noise completely but can cut down the amplification of this in relation to other noises.
Have a hearing test. In some areas this can be done easily on the NHS on the high street. Google AQP hearing test in your location.
