I remember his programmes, they were always interesting. Rest in peace Alan.

Always interesting on TV, RIP.
Sad news - always enjoyed 'Whickers World'
Whicker's World was always a 'must see' whilst I was growing up.

An amazing journalist whose book 'Whicker's War' made fascinating reading.

RIP

" As the Sun sinks slowly in the West, we say farewell and bon voyage to Alan Whicker..."

RIP Alan Whicker. Very distinctive voice, as fondly lampooned by the Monty Python team..

I started a thread over in Chatterbank however thinking about it - it is more appropriate and respectful for it to be in news.

Sad though it is, he has led a full life and can now rest.
Tha's how to live your life if you are lucky enough.
Very sad news, the world has lost a true legend. "Whicker's World" was required viewing in our house & I learnt much from those programmes.

RIP Alan
awww, very sad.
I hope they run some of 'Whicker's World' as a tribute.

he did plenty before he started on Whicker's World.

I sat next to him on a plane once but was too shy to talk to him.

/he did plenty before he started on Whicker's World. /

and believe it or not; Cliff Michelmore is still going. He's 93.
he was a wonderful broadcaster, mostly hands off stuff, let the person speak, which sadly many of the modern day air heads don't seem to.
Alistair Cooke was another of that ilk. I could have listened to him all day...
I enjoyed his travel programmes, RIP Alan Whicker.
A tribute to him .......

I met briefly in 1989, when I went to Jersey for the weekend. He was quite the most courteous man I have ever met. I shall miss him.
He was reported killed in the Korean War. He sent a message to his news desk: "Unkilled. Uninjured. Onpressing".He said he was the only person he knew who was interested in other people's holiday photos. He once entered an Alan Whicker sound alike competition and came third. And he was travelling 100, 000 miles a year [The Times]

He was a great cross-examiner, too. The interviewee was relaxed with him and the killer question was often not needed. There would be silence and suddenly the person would feel obliged to break it and come out with the most damaging statement. Whicker would just raise an eyebrow.
Alan Whicker's travel programmes and Alastair Cook's Letter From America are among my most memorable broadcasting favourites of all time.
He will be missed, I always looked forward to his programmes.
Rest in peace Alan Whicker.
