Broadband Without A Working Telephone Line
30 Answers
I have had the phone "off the hook" for over a year now, because it seemed the only way to stop being bombarded by nuisance calls. I have tried the Telephone Preference Service but its worst than useless. Everybody who knows me now contacts me by text, Mobile or email, an easy task when you have an Iphone !
I just don't use the landline at all, but I need it to provide my BT Internet connection, with which I am very happy. Or do I ? Can I get that broadband connection without having a working telephone line ! I did try to find out from the BT website but give up after going around in circles for half an hour?
I don't want to use a dongle.

Thanks hc, but in my part of South Wales, we don't have 3g yet, let alone the wonders of 4g ! As reception for FM radio still isn't very good, we are not holding our breath !
I am pleased with the service that I get from BT ...I just wanted to know if I could do away with the telephone call-making ability and save money.

I used to use a small campsite overlooking Little Haven for many years, until there was a double murder of two campsite residents a few years ago. The view from our tent was second to none. Spent many evenings sitting outside the pubs on the Harbour, with a pint of Bass !
No computers in those days though. Not sure what level of internet service the residents of that part of Pembrokeshire get....not very good I would have thought. As for fibre-optic cable ............. !

My son has broadband from BT. He doesn't have or pay for a telephone service, and just uses his mobile. Have you tried talking to BT? He had no problems at all in getting broadband without a phone (obviously, you need a phone line, but that doesn't mean that you need to pay for a phone service if you don't want one).

"Another obvious tricky issue is how to deal with nuisance calls from overseas. From your comments, it seems that lots of you have received them and yet there’s little we can do – the TPS can’t block overseas calls. One wonders if the boom in unwanted texts and calls opens up an unnecessary market in paid-for call blocking services provided by many telecom firms?!
