The Met Office last night upgraded a heat health alert for some areas from Level 2 to the more serious Level 3, warning of potentially “dangerous” conditions for the elderly and vulnerable.

A spokesman said: “Heatwaves can be dangerous, especially for the very young, very old or those with chronic diseases.”

The warning, issued with the Department of Health, applies to the East Midlands and the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Official figures suggest around 500 people could die this weekend alone.

N/kent, getting better now,
fans have just cut-in in the lounge, Phew!
cameron says its the fault of the previous government , and he inherited this heat wave ,not his fault.
and please please no dogs left in cars while it is like this
Someone was arrested for leaving a four-year-old asleep in a car, yesterday!
36.5 the car read at 4.20pm, dogs have had a paddle in there pool, I put the cat in it twice as he kept meowing at me ( in his terms I am bloody hot), heat mat and window open on baby hogs, gazzebo over ferrets with washing up bowl full of water for them to dig in, cleaned duck pond out ou so they are fine, I am so hot now,
whurules....apparently some cruel idiotic people still leave dogs in cars. In a supermarket car park in my area...the police were trying to find the owner of a dog left (with a few inches of window open!) in the car on Saturday.... I can only hope the owner came back or the police broke into to release the poor dog. Why are people so bloody stupid!
