Something like an e-mail that would open on a date you selected with a message.

That'll do nicely. Thanks, Em
only don't lose the phone, as that is a bummer...
If you are using Windows then there are plenty of free alarm clocks e.g. http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?tag=pfindersrch&searchtype=downloads&query=alarm+clock&filter=platform=Windows|&filterName=platform=Windows| - some replace the standard taskbar clock and most include being able to set the message that gets displayed at the alarm time.

If you are using Thunderbird for emails then Lightning is an excellent calendar add-on that includes alarms and ReminderFox is another specifically for reminders.

Mozilla also have Sunbird https://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/ which is the standalone version of Lightning.
its easier with mobile as you can put it in your pocket...
the OP was about reminders on computers
i know that, perhaps sandy hadn't thought of the phone,
I believe Wunderlist might be what you're after:

yes, those little post-it notes stick to the screen quite well
Wouldn't work for me as I never open junk mail.
My screen is covered in post it notes!! I must delete some of them they are way out of date.
There is an email service that will email you in the future. Can't remember the name of it.
There's evernote, too, pretty nice.
Google calendar sends me email reminders
Lucy ~ it can't email you in the past .... or can it?

:-)
I like the Google calendar, it's very handy for me. Easy to understand too - a must for folk who don't know much about computers.
