looking for a dog

I i,m looking for anyone in or around swansea s/wales that is giving away a dog or a pup for me and my family to take out for walk,s most be good with children if a big dog .

Can I suggest you start by approaching a rescue centre? They'll be well placed to match you with a suitable dog and will offer backup once you have met your perfect pet.

I am a bit concerned about the 'giving away' bit though - even if the dog itself comes for free, looking after one is a big committment financially. I would definitely suggest you find out about the costs of food, worm and flea treatment, vaccinations, kennels and insurance. My monthly bill for 2 dogs and 2 cats exceeds �60, not including insurance, and (touch wood) none of them require long-term medication.

Have top agree with Eels, the actual cost of the animal is the smallest amount of money that you will have to shell out. With respect if you can't afford that then maybe a dog is not for you?

I wonder also whether you are over 18??

PS, on re reading this I am even more puzzled. Dogs are not just for walking, they need training, feeding, care and attention, housing, they need to be able to get out to the loo and have that mess cleaned up, finally they need exercise whatever the weather and whatever you feel like....and, when you are bored, they can't be put back in the box and forgotten.

Have you really thought about all this?

If you're looking for a dog for the sole reason of walking it, then I'm afraid you really shouldn't own a dog at all

For the people with the answer about looking for a dog just to let you know i do know how much is with keepping a pet. Ihave fish,birds and rabbits and they are all look after well, sand i have had dogs before what have past on.it would be nice to have a dog now i,m home all day to look after one.

Under eighteens often do post on here about having a pet and you didn't give any indication of your age or gender, which is of course your right.

My intention was merely to remind people that the law in England says that you cannot purchase or own an animal if you are under the age of 18. Again, I am sorry if you found the way that I expressed myself offensive

When you posted your question, you didn't mention that you have other pets or that you had kept a dog before and understand about responsible ownership.

Like Eels, I would suggest that a rescue centre would be your best bet. I understand that they will still make a charge and will expect to inspect your home and talk to your family to match you with the right animal.

Sorry your replies have been quite judgmental. There are so many pleasures dogs can bring and yes, walking is one of them.

Try the Freeads for someone rehoming their pet, else try your local rescue centre. There is a Dogstrust in Bridgend. The dogs are not free but come neutered and vaccinated and, as pointed out previously, the staff can match one to your requirements and vice versa. If you have children under 5, you may not rehome from the RSPCA. I am not sure what the Dogstrust rules are.

They are so many unwanted animals in those shelters I think you would feel great satisfaction from rehoming one.
