Loads of people like to collect things, particularly things with which they have a strong association, so it seems quite unsurprising that Jimmy should collect guitars. Aside from the fact that they would be a good investment for the future - pension fund, perhaps ? - there is also the point that when you get REALLY familiar with something you start to appreciate the differences in individual examples which go unnoticed by people with only a passing aquaintance. A bit like the way women think all cars are the same, or somebody with cloth ears might think that a cheap japanese audio system is the same as 'Hi-Fi'. Point is that Jimmy will probably appreciate things about the guitars in his collection which non-players might not even notice.
