When watching live theatre, the sudden change into singing and dancing comes across as perfectly natural, but in film, it looks rather odd and stiled - with the exception of the only two musicals I have ever really enjoyed -
West Side Story (borderline odd singing and dancing) and Grease (utterly sublime and entirely appropriate singing and dancing).

Ta Andy :-)
Apart from a few notable exceptions (IMO) ive never really 'got' musicals, they seem to be ticking along nicely, then all of a sudden they burst into unnecessary song and dance routines which drag a moment out far too long.
And yes, I will admit to being a bit of a pleb- gimme a good zombie film anyday ;-)

Boo, seems we agree then.
To me, the total nadir of musicals is South Pacific which lurched between homo-erotic sailors prancing about, to some suntanned old dear gazoing skyward and singing gibberish! That's two hours I will never get back!!
Want to know of you are a pleb? This test will only apply if you are 50-plus though - if you can hear the William Tell Overture and NOT think of the Lone Ranger, you are not a pleb!
I fail miserably every time!

that's about it though Khandro, my singing and dance skills are sadly lacking :(
My brother in law got dragged to see Sweeney Todd at the cinema and said 45 minutes into the film ' Is this a f*****g muscial?' to which my sarcastic sister said ' No, it's not!'. He then said a further 20 minutes later '' It f******g is you know!''

Sharingan - the producers and promotors of Sweeny Todd were certainly naughty in the way they promoted this film.
They highlighted that it starred Johnny Depp in order to encourage his seriously large audience to go and see the film, but the trailers showed no singing, and did not refer to the fact that this was a film version of a musical stage show.
Your B-I-L is not alone in feeling aggrieved at being enticed into the cinema under false pretences!

I sympathise with those who can't believe people suddenly breaking into song and dance; if you don't get musicals, you don't. The best I can suggest is that you try to see the plot as a vehicle for the music, not the other way round. Real people don't behave like people in musicals, the same as real cowboys don't behave like John Wayne. You just need to suspend your disbelief and enjoy, as best you can.
