How do I deal with a burn mark on an old but valuable ash Ercol table in otherwise good condition ?

The burn is about 3 cm long, 1cm at it's widest point and tapering away at one end.

Can I use a chemical to bleach the burn and then stain to match up ?

No expert on re-finishing I'm afraid, Derek. But, you might try rubbing white spirit or meths using fine wire wool. (Used by cabinetmakers.)
