What do you call someone who was born/lives in Hong Kong now that it has changed ruling hands? Someone told me, they are called Locals, which is fine if you're in the country, but not if you're outside the country. Chinese? British? Something else?
It will largely depend on what nationality they are in the first place. Are you concerned with location or ethnicity? A useful generic would be a Hong Kong National.
The 'Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank' (The present HSBC), used to be called the 'Honkers & Shankers' by the British expats which I thought to be a bit precious.
My Chinese colleagues call Hong Kong Chinese 'Honkies' to their faces. Most HK born Chinese would want to be seperately identified, in the same way that Shanghainese consider themselves much more sophisticated that Beijingers.
