Hairballs are pretty uncommon in dogs. I'd suggest a visit to your vet. Coughing and retching can be symptoms of some serious health problems in dogs, and while this is unlikely to be the case in such a young dog, you'd be well advised to get him checked out.

Coughing can be a symptom of heart problems. Has he been in contact with any other dogs, as it could be kennel cough. He doesn't have to have been in kennels, it can be transmitted in the air or on clothes, or from another dog coughing.

Suggest you visit the vet in case he needs antibiotics.

My dog had the same thing, as said above it was probably something he may have caught from another dog.

Vets gave him antIbiotics and he was fine less than a week later.

He just had a vet visit for his check up and got shot's, I told them about this and they said nothing but he has done it since I got him which was about 8 months ago. He does it everyday and he has ever since I got him. I don't understand. The lady I bought him from is actually a family friend and she says her dogs do it too more in cold weather....

Is this a puppy you got from her, was it from a breeding of the pair she has, that coughs? That is a bad breeding practice (bad breeders don't care if a fault is bred or carried into the dogs), or did she rescue this group of dogs she has, just was wondering...The vet needs to check for heart condition like lankeela suggest, it needs an X-ray I assume, I'm not a vet, also to rule out any kind of esophugas/treachea problems, like when you walk them it can do damage to the neck area if they pull hard and often. It could be an allergy of some kind also I think, something comes out in the cold weather like pine or something.

I have a friend that has a husky that coughs and gags when he drinks cold water, but just for a a couple of times, then he's fine.

That's kinda what he does, he does it when he drinks water...he might only do it when he drinks water I'm not sure, I don't know everytime he drinks water though. I will just try and keep track of it and figure out if it only happens when he drinks water...for some reason that helped thanks much
