1.4 ford fiesta diesel

Hi all, know nothing about cars (obviously). Have been looking at loads of websites for a 1.4 ford fiesta diesel, for my son. Seems to be a lot of them about, but only tonight someone told me that you cannot get a 1.4 diesel, that they are all 1.6. Would a 1.4 be classed as 1.6 for taxing purposes or am i being told a load of "you know what". any advice would be appreciated.

If people are advertising cars as 1.4l there's a reasonable chance that they know what they're selling! (The engine size is is specified on the V5C document, so there wouldn't be much point in lying!).

Wikipedia states that the Ford Fiesta has been available with a 1.4l diesel engine (which is actually 1398cc) since 2002:

Thank you for that Chris. Until we see the Vehicle Reg Cert.we will not know what engine size it is. Will have to wait til then..just thought someone out there might have a 1.4 diesel to confirm it for me that they actually do exist!

Of course Ford do a 1.4 diesel - I have a 1.2 diesel Ibiza, so tell your informant to get thier facts correct.
also Smart cars have a 0.8 litre engine (800cc)

A bit of advice Gin, take someone that has good knowledge about the workings of a car, this way you will not get stung as one or two on this site has found out, if there is a service book check it, see when the car was / has been serviced, depending on the mileage if the belt has been changed etc, has the car been used for towing! ( Clutch wear) It may cost you £10/£20 to go with you to check the car out but it's money well spent at least it will put your mind at rest.

The earlier Fiesta diesels only came in a 1.6, your informant may have been confusing the model year in question.

I have a Fiesta 1.4 TDci this is a nasty engine - watch out for a ticking noise, it sounds like tappets but is the injector seals leaking - expensive.
Also some need a special battery - also expensive, I think Ford were having a royal laugh when they sold these !
This fiesta is cheap to tax (£35 per year) but is nasty and cheaply built too.
Get a German or Japanese built car that is built to last.

Iggle Piggle - most of the 1.4 tdci's were built in Germany. And, on the whole they are very well built cars. It may have taken Ford 20+ years to build a decent Fiesta that doesn't rust, has decent suspension and handling, but they did. The 1.4 tdci engine is very reliable as long as the oil is changed regularly (to protect the turbo more than anything else). The performance in terms of 0-60 is never going to thrill anyone, but it is absolutely fine for a car that will primarily be used for cost efficiant commuting, or as a car to ferry the kids to school. If you want a 'proper' diesel engine then buy a Jag (also from the Ford family), if you want a fuel efficient means of transport a Fiesta is the car for the job. In the unlikely event of a engine problem, I know which engine would be cheaper to repair.
