Just heard back from the DVLA today regarding my request for info on an old car reg found on a family photograph.
No luck I`m afraid as because of the Data protection act they are unable to give me any info according to the 1998 act there is a duty to protect the privacy of individuals.
A bit strange that bearing in mind this photo was taken in 1928 and no family member is alive to be upset by any information given.
So now all I can do is look at the photo and continue to wonder about it`s history
I will say though the DVLA did return my £2 50 search fee !!

You can check this site to see if the car is taxed meaning it still exists and is on the road......

http://www.askmid.com/
Askmid, as Toureman says, will tell you if the car is insured.
If you have the reg. and make of the car you should try here: https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/home/intro?skin=directgov.
Follow the link for vehicle enquiry.

Thanks for your suggestions have tried both sites but still drawing a blank.DVLA just wont give out info.
What info are you expecting them to give out?

They are absolutely right to withold information on car registrations unless people have a real need for it (curiosity isn't generally seen as that :c) )

You realise too that pre-war registration information may not be very complete compared to modern computerised data

This site may help depending on what you want - it should at least tell you where the car was registered

Is that the one with a Morris Oxford Oxy?
Question Author
Yes TWR it is the Morris Oxford I wanted info on. Hi jake the peg not sure if you read my previous request.I have an old photo with family sitting in this car and just wanted some info who owned it etc. I don't see how it would cause any problem as they are all my family so wouldn't upset any one else.
Question Author
Should have told you it is a WL. Registered between Dec 1925 and June 1930 the photo is dated 1928
One way you may be able to find out Oxy, contact Genes Unite, explain your inquiry with your photo, I'm sure they would help you, I have a photo of the Oceanic Ship in Graving Dock L/Pool, it was posted in Londonderry Sep 11, the date is not shown, it was posted to a Miss D Ownsworth moor end house, Stanboro, Barnsley Yorks, I have been trying to get info on that family without success but I'll keep trying. Good Luck.
The data protection act doesn't apply to dead people but I suppose they are not in a position to be certain that the 1928 owner is still alive
Question Author
Thanks TWR certainly another line of enquiry to try.
Factor fiction The youngest family member in the photo would be at least 103 now but could in theory still be alive.
Just a wild one
Could you find out where the car was bought as new ( by the plate no. ) and who it was registered to then work from there
There will be a oxford owners club and they will help I am sure with some more info
Question Author
Espookid the WL registration was the Oxford BA area1925 to1930 photo taken 1928 so could have previous owners which is where I hit a brick wall as DVLA will not give me any info at all about the car
Have tried Oxford Owners Club but no info found. Thanks anyway
I love your answer to 'what trouble it would cause as they're all your familly'

I'm guessing you come from a familly where people generally get on!

There could be all sorts of reasons why people would want information about who owned a car at some time.

For example the owner might be someone's lover! It might relate to a will or any of dozens of cases.

The principle is that personal information is kept confidential unless there is a good reason to divulge it.

They probably simply don't have complete records from so long ago either!
