I have just bought Civilization V for PC on disc, installed it and 4.35GB of files were transferred to the appropriate Steam folder.
However when I double click the desktop shortcut to play the game I am taken to my library of games in Steam where there is a Play button; clicking on that starts it "discovering existing files" for the game until it decides that a 3.3GB download is necessary whilst, at the same time, deleting all the files that had previously been installed.
Is this normal 'cos I can't see what I am doing wrong?
Yay ! Civ was the first game I got keen on, before I progressed to SMAC. (That is if you don't count the text "Adventure" and "Dungeon" I used to play on the work PDP11.)
I can only wish you luck. I avoid Steam or any form of download instead of a disk in a box. Not only have I read of others having troubles, I object to being monitored and having to log in and register a game I've bought, which I believe is common practice for Steam purchases ?
Are they still flogging Civ ? Talk about a cash cow. I'd have thought they'd be giving away something that old by now.
This game was in the box but Steam still has to stick its nose in. I guess that the game must have been completely updated since the disc version was released 3yrs ago and that is why the whole game is being downloaded.
This is Civilization V so not the very original version that I used to play on the Amiga, and I also bought the Brave New World expansion pack which has only just been released to good reviews.
It completed the download as I was typing that last reply (so didn't actual download anything like 3GB) and it was ready and waiting for me to start the game. And it works - hurrah!
Same principles as the original game, OG, but much expanded in terms of the available decisions during the game - you can even win by achieving world peace - with everything being animated in detail.
