Hyperthyroidism In Cat

Cat has been to vet and his thyroid reading is very high, 150. Vet has recommended one tablet a day, or an operation to remove one thyroid gland, or Hills y/d diet. I plumped for the diet but have now been reading negative reports saying Hills diet isn't all it's cracked up to be. The author recommends radiation of the thyroid. Don't know what to do for the best. Can someone help please? It's not just the cost, I don't want to buy the food and then the cat gets kidney disease or the thyroid turns into cancer or something, apparently there is no iodine in this diet.

Sorry smurfchops, I'm sure you're really upset and worried. My cat was diagnosed with this in October last year. I was not given the option of diet so can't help on that. Common sense would tell me that it would have to be only mildly above normal for a diet alone to control but I'm just guessing. My cat was old (17) so they wouldn't give me the option of removal as it would be too stressful so I ended up with the tablets. It did become a right pain getting those down her every day. Had she been younger I'd have definitely opted for removal.
Only vets can advise really though.

How old is your cat Smurf? I would be inclined to go for the surgery depending on age.

My cat was 18 when she had that operation smurfchops and she was fine and still is. She's now 20. Getting pills down her wasn't an option as she gets too stressed and so do I.

The thyroid won't become malignant.

Diet and or cod, doesn't contain enough iodine....nowhere near enough.

Tablets.......yes

Operation would be my choice.

How old is your cat? Little kittens often have all sorts of diseases because they are too weak and can't cope with many diseases.

They say you have to mind the temperature all the time because too low temperatures can cause diseases.
Nutrition is important but other factors also mean a lot.
