I think the "hammer" really was a battle axe. Metaphorically, he swung it with the ease that an ordinary mortal would swing a hammer.

He carries his hammer Mjolnir. It has a short haft because it was made by the dwarves.

If you meet him you should greet him with "How's your hammer hanging?"

My book of Norse Myth doesn't mention an axe. His hammer Miolnir (spell it how you like) always returned to his hand when he threw it, so he wouldn't need any other weapon.
