We all know that some cannot be blamed for forming new relationships after a death of a partner (especially at such an early age), but in this case surely this soldier's widow should have given his parents first chance of ownership of this medal?

I think we should all think that we wouldn't judge a person until we have walked a mile in their shoes.
I've had first had experience of the "spin" the DM can put on things and none of us know the real situation.
From my point of view, I couldn't have done it. My grandfather recently showed us his medals from WW2. Hitherto, they were kept in a drawer in the kitchen (!), in the envelopes they came in. His instructions are "They are your mum's and then they are yours, but if ever you need the money, you MUST sell them". Now I couldn't bring myself to do that, but who knows what I might do if I were desperate...........

I don't think you can compare todays soldiers with those who joined up in 1945 AOG
They joined up knowing there was a real present danger of attack - I don't see the Taliban poised across the channel ready to invade
Those in Afghanistan and Iraq are not making us any safer.
The other major difference is that they are joining up to fight an 'enemy' from a position of massive technical superiority.
In 1939 people joined up to fight an enemy that was technologically superior.
I wonder how many of today's recruits would be joining up to go to Afghanistan to fight an enemy equipped with stealth aircraft and smart missile systems where casualties were even or perhaps even stacked against us.
Not so heroic machine-gunning guys in 4x4s from an Apache helicopter gunship is it really?

in 1939-45 people didn't kill others for a living, it was more likely that they were called up and require
Doesn't sound as though the parents of this one chose to spend too much time offering comfort or sympathy to their widowed daughter in law. And when she does something they don't like they get on the phone to the Mail. Where's their loyalty, then?

/// maybe she wanted no connection with the military life that claimed her husband and her daughter's father - I wouldn't. ///
How do you know the child was his?,
*** His widow, who is in a new relationship and has a daughter, ***
Interesting to note that he had only been married a few months before he was killed, also he was killed four years ago, and his parents had nothing to do with their boy's wife for four years also.
Perhaps they had every good reason to dislike her.

'"Kills people for a living" what a horrible statement, I would have thought you better than that, but obviously I was wrong.'
It is a horrible statement - would you prefer something more PC - 'personnel-neatralising operative' perhaps - but then again it's a horrible job isn't it?
Thought better of me? It's a bit late for that!

Why is it? Maybe they just tied the knot in between his tours of duty.

Some are already here.
And you don't think that we have anything to fear from the 'enemy within'
If there was to be such a conflict in this country, I suppose you would be very grateful of their protection then, unless of course you would be on the other side?
As regards your statement that we are technology superior, that may be true if we were allowed to use the full force of our technology, but we can't, that is why we have been fighting for years with one arm tied behind our back, if we hadn't those conflicts would have been over almost before they were started.

You are kind of getting off the point of your original question AOG. Your OP was about whether the widow should have offered the medal to his parents.
The answer is, it was HERS to do with what she wished. It is entirely possible she needed the money. The DM will only have given one side of the story. The Taliban are irrelevant to this thread.

In an ideal world everyone would behave nicely towards one another. The wife and the parents would have maintained contact and everyone would be respectful and nice. this is not an ideal world and none of us have the first idea of why they did not maintian contact and why everything went so badly. If it had been me, I probably would have offered the medal to his parents however much I despised them because I think it's a nice thing to do, but that does not mean in this case that the wife is the one in the wrong, his parents might have been perfectly vile to her.

This post has echoes of the OP. Strange that they were posed by the same person. AOG, stop being outraged at the crap the Daily Wail trots out and go be outraged at something worth being outraged at.
