I was close,glad to help.
Lucerne, alfalfa, is planted as a fodder crop due to the presence of nitrogen-fixing bacteria living symbiotically in its roots (as is the case with all members of the Papilionaceae). This nitrogen, when fixed, enables the cow to produce protein.
