a dry riser is a pipe that runs vertically through a building with an inlet at the bottom and outlets on each floor for the fire brigade to connect their hoses to. a dry riser is drained after use and normally has no water in the pipe until the fire brigade charges it up from their pump (fire engine). a wet riser is similar in design but has water already in it.
