Time Off To Attend Funeral
My father in law was diagnosed with terminal cancer last Friday and told it's only a matter of days. Am I entitled to take a day off from work to attend the funeral? I'm prepared to take it off unpaid. Many thanks in advance.

My boss is very kind and understanding and I have worked many favours for the company when they have been short handed. I'm hoping they will return the favour. I've never had any time off sick or any unauthorised absences in the time I've worked for them since I had open heart surgery 6 years ago. Many thanks for your kind messages:)
I once worked for a boss who wouldn't give a colleague time off to attend the funeral of an uncle she was extremely close to. A few weeks later the boss's female partner died, and, of course, she wasn't 'entitled' to any time off, but took it and the rest of the staff were very supportive to her, although she didn't deserve them to be! I think it taught her a lesson in compassion.
Yeah, when my mother died (1994)
the pit boss commented : how on earth do you expect me to run the works if you go (to the funeral)
and I said that I didnt actually care.....
and a sympathetic colleague said o that's nothing - you know in the Glasgow subsid, they wouldnt allow someone time off for chemo ?
He went around commenting - it is lucky I only have cancer - I could have something really serious.....
