Inspired by an earlier thread.

Do you think natural remedies have some uses, or are they a load of tosh?

I feel if something is effective and safe, it would have a license. However, i have used a few things (manuka honey, for instance) which i have seen to work. But i don't believe has a licence yet.

What do you think?

Homeopathy is a load of bunkum (to be polite). How can anything diluted to the point where it has nothing detectable but water have any medicinal effect?

HI Pixie...I have tried homeopathy twice. The second time I got nowhere but the first was terrific. Twenty odd years of far too severe and frequent cystitis was making my life so miserable....time off work....cutting short holidays...days curled up in bed...not me at all.... and losing my sense of humour.
One day I collapsed while on a school trip...enough was enough so I gave homeopathy a try....an unbelievable result.
That was in 1988 and not a hint of cystitis since.
Yes I know I will be told it was the placebo effect...it wasn't and it wasn't the other theory often given that it's because someone has an hour or two to devote to you whereas a doctor has minutes.....the only thing I found difficult was the length of the appointment. I don't want to pour out my ills and concerns. But hey....it changed my life as anyone who has really severe cystitis will understand.
Acupuncture I use for any aches and pains...particularly when I was massaging....no sore wrists, arms or back. Brilliant.
As for Manuka Doctor....fantastic! The leg that didn't heal for five months was right as rain after a week of use....so much so I am going to order their skin care products. If it can heal the mess my leg was think what it will do to the wrinkles!
The late MrG humoured me a bit because he put all his faith and trust in the doctors and specialists who were treating him...which is why he is the late MrG...I told him so....;-)
I remember an outbreak of scabies in the university days. Itches like a bitch and one of the only things that helped it were remedies a friend made up from oils like geranium.

I had acupuncture via physio at the hospital and was really impressed, it made a lot more of a difference than I thought it would.

no opinion of homeopathy other than it has never worked for me

Btw, I think you are using the term homeopathy wrongly, it doesn't refer to natural remedies in general.

Daffy...have you used homeopathy?
daffy is right. using manuka honey is not homeopathy . I use a homeopathic remedy for hay fever and it does work -don't know why - but you have to take it every 4 hours so I normally take a regular pill in the morning and if I have an acute attack use the homepathic remedy with almost immediate results -if its all in the mind i don't care - if it works so what?
Why would I use something that has absolutely no proof or possibility of working gness?
daffy -how do you know it wouldn't work if you don't try it -thats like saying you hate carrots but have never tasted them! Just because you don't understand how something could possibly work does not mean it doesn't work.
Natural remedies do not begin & end with homeopathy. Plenty of natural remedies made it into conventional medicine when the relevant tests passed. I neither love nor hate homeopathy, but I have no belief that it works.
Hi Morrigan...I appreciate Manuka is not homeopathy....I saw a homeopath for the cystitis and will always be thankful I did.
The Manuka Doctor is something different but by god does it work wonders..
Had a nice long walk last week and for the first time no swelling and splitting of the skin....healed and all the redness gone in a week.
Now just need a miracle cure for the half stone that arrived when I couldn't walk. x
Daffy...we'll have to differ but I'm not daft or gullible....just cystitis free and happy I went along that route. x
OG...I don't think Reiki works...don't *think*...because I haven't tried it so I wouldn't be confident enough to say it doesn't.
gness -I had what I think was a spider bite on my ankle and after 3 weeks it was not healing at all -very red and the area around the bite was getting hard -I applied manuka honey strength 10 and bandaged it and within a few days the bite was no longer red and inflamed and has now healed -its fantastic stuff -I now have it every morning with yoghurt for breakfast too.
Good isn't it, M? The one I am using also contains bee venom. I have found it on line so I am going to order their skin care range so this time next year I shall look young and beautiful...Hmmm...might be asking a bit too much there! ;-)
Natural remedies yes. Homeopathy is bunkum.
gness, where do you buy your manuka honey and how much does it cost?
Hi Stoke...the Manuka I use is not the same as the Manuka honey which I do eat.
This I bought in desperation from H&B for £25 and it's an ointment..you wouldn't eat it.
It was so amazingly effective I googled..Manuka Doctor...and have found it much cheaper...x
Stock....not Stoke...sorry :-)

Sorry. Went for dinner and came back to lots of answers! Thanks all. You are right, homeopathy is not exactly the the same as alternative remedies - that's the phrase i should have used. It is great that they appear to work for some people.
So homeopathy is the same principal as a live vaccine, or, i suppose, any vaccination. And they clearly do work.
In my experience, i didn't have a horse for a year and when i went to work with them, i got really itchy, puffy eyes from the hay. I've never had hay fever before or since. I continued working there and after a couple of months, the symptoms stopped. I can only think my body had got re-accustomed to it.
Thanks gness, I'll go and have a Google-about.
