It's off topic as I don't know legal download / streaming services outside the UK but pirate bay hasn't actually closed down, they continue to move their service to different countries and have recently celebrated 10 years in operation.

I also understand that they have produce a version of Firefox that automatically provides the proxies required to access the site from any location even where Internet providers are trying to block it (like here in Europe).

ISP's in the Uk have been told to bar access via searches to TPB, it has not been shut down

A quick search for TPB proxy should get you there
