ipod full up

I'm a bit confused. I have 577 songs on my ITune Library which comes to only 2.8 GB, but when I just updated my IPOD it says it's full. It was empty before I downloaded all the songs on to library, si it can't have any extra songs. So why does my IPOD say something different to ITunes?

make sure that there isnt a button/switch lock on . my sons only up/downloads when its not on.
