Hi i have a little cleaning job i do 10 hours a week its my only job . My first wage slip came in with tax code O2 . I have been taxed £22 which i thought i didnt pay only working 10 hours. Phoned my boss and said as i did not have a p45 when i started i thought employers had to fill out a p46. He told me to phone the inland revenue???
I dont even know my tax office that my company deal with. Is it my employer who has to sort this ? should they have given me a p.46 ?. Or is it how my boss said my responsibility to call and sort with inland revenue ?. Im very confused any help would be great, will have a look later for answers.

If you have no p45 you will be taxed at the maximum rate for even 1 hours work. You need to contact the inland revenue and get a tax code sent to your employer. There is an inland revenue helpline that can deal with this , you will need your NI number and other personal details , there is one central database now so any tax office will be able to help.
Yes, it's your responsibility to ensure the employer gets the information to assign the right code. The employer can't be expected to know whether or not you have any other income this tax year or what your tax allowances are. HMRC (not Inland Revenue) will sort it out if you contact them using Eddie's link
And if your employer uses a payroll package you should get a rebate as soon as your tax code is entered.

If not you'll have to claim your rebate from HMRC...

Just to clarify, it makes no difference how many hours you work, tax is dependant on earnings not hour worked. If you earn over £9440 in a year then you will pay tax on anything above that.

You might only be working 10 hours a week but you could be getting paid £100ph in which case you would definately pay tax!!

Many thanks to you all I will phone the inland revenue first thing Monday morning

£100!an hour I wish lol
and yes you need your tax code sorted
as 10 hr week at lets us say £7 /hr (cleaning is not a great money earner)
is £70 a week - which gives a yearly income of £3500 which as people imply above is below your tax limit assuming there are no other sources of income.
so yes once you get it sorted you should not be paying tax
if all the info stays the same.
But please make sure you search on/contact HMRC and not Inland Revenue! I have seen a site which uses Inland Revenue in its name (pretending to be an official government site) and handles claims on your behalf but takes a cut of any rebate!
Here's what I mean.
When you type "Inland Revenue tax rebate" or similar into Google the first entry is this.
http://www.inland-revenue.org.uk/contact-us.html?gclid=CPX54OHBibkCFSGWtAodkWgAsA
It looks like it's a government body but it's not. They take 17% of any rebate.
