New York eating places

We are doing NY on a budget and would like a few ideas of v cheap eating places and where they are! Chinatown has been suggested to us, anywhere else?

Haven't been there for a while, but try Little India between 1st and 2nd Avenues, round about 5th/6th Street. Excellent value Indian food. Also, when I was there, many restaurants were unlicenced, which meant you could bring your own bottle(s).

YOU will never go hungry in good old New York there's endless places to eat and cheap places where you select what food you want hot or cold and then they weigh it, and you can sit and eat in these deli's and a great meal can be had for about $6 coffee around a $ For Breakfast, eggs, bacon, hash brown's, sauages, and toast and coffee around $4 I know the length and breadth of New York and only have to go a few steps until you come upon a place for meals and will have no problem Have a great time, probably not so good just now with all the snow....

I used to work in 'The Firehouse' on the corner of 85th and Columbus Ave a few years back, and the food there was great. Classic yankee stodge for pretty cheap. Worth a look in if you're knocking around the Natural History Museum.

If you fancy American, try Silver Spurs - 490 Laguardia Pl at Houston St. It's in a great area - Greenwich Village and very near Washington Square (a wonderful place for people-watching). It's a simple place - clean, efficient and incredibly cheap. The portions are huge (ofcourse) and the salads are excellent. Enjoy!!

Dimsum in China town fab. and very reasonable, but prepare yourself that unless you are a party of twelve you will be plonked on a table full of strangers and hurried along to vacate your space asap. Don't take it personally it's just the form, especially if its a real local haunt! More bums on seats equals more profit equal less charming mama. Up by the cable car to Roosevelt Island ( yes Spiderman) there is the worst looking least ambient Indian restaurant in the world, persevere you go in there for the food, but if it was not recommended to you the ramshacle stairs and rotten decor would put off , food to die for (in a good way) Hubbie often in India and was very impressed.
