Managing a pub. Best route to sucess

I have been offered the role of assistant manager in my local pub where I work an additional 18 hours per week as well as my 9-5 office job. I would love to take the job but it would mean quite a pay cut. As now I earn approx 18K and the offer is only 12K.

However, I have tons of ideas and everyone thinks that I'm so natural to bar work, I am only 22 but have worked in bars from being 16. The manager who has offered me the role, seems to think that I would have my own pub within a year.

My question is, is it worth it to work my way through the ranks on a low salary or can anyone recommend courses that would fastrack me?

I think it really boils down to your attitude to risk. As a more conservative (witn a small C) person, I would stay with the better paid job unless the pub could come back with a better offer - say �15k. However, if you are happy taking a risk (ie you take a pay cut to get the career and lifestyle you want in the long run) then go for it. The manager's comments are positive, but then he would say that wouldn't he if he could get a reliable person to do his/herdonkey work for �12K!?

Sorry there's no clear answer and I hope I haven't been too harsh on you - it just boils down to the fact that YOU have to take a decision and there is no right or wrong way.

Have you also considered whether you would save on travel if the pub is your local ? Or if you'd save the money for your lunch if you get it at the pub ? And also, you will always get the tips ( tax free ). I know it may not be that much money, but its something !

I've taken a 14K job because I thought it sounded a lot more that my previous 12.5K, but I ve come to realise I now spend a lot more because of the job ! It's late shifts, so I have to pay for a taxi home, as well as the bus to work, and that alone makes up for the difference in pay ( I could walk to and from work before ). All in all, you just have to consider whether this is something you would really like doing. A job you love is worth some sacrifices !

Deep down the pub will make you more creative. I left a well paid job to something I enjoy and if you can afford to do it- go ahead.

Becareful with Ideas - ideas are free and anyone can come up them.. I know so many intelligent buisness people fail after having wonderful ideas.. Do your market reserch...find out what your customers want..not you and most of all take NVQ in Mangament.
