Wen we rented our house out and moved abroad in May we set up a Royal Mail redirection to my Mum's house. We're back in the UK for a bit and popped in to see the tenants who handed over a wad of mail that hadn't been redirected. One of the items was a £1200 tax rebate cheque (which I imagine wouldn't have been chased up by HMRC if it wasn't cashed!)

Has anyone had any experience with complaining to RM? Will I get my money back or fobbed off do you think? Reading a bit online it seems people have been offered a few stamps as compo, which won't benefit me as I don't even live here....

They are usually quite good -
I would complain in terms of other areas redirecct much better

SOme official letters say do not redirect...
it's all about what exact titles and names you put on the redirection form, they can be proper arses when it comes to the detail, did you organise it online or at your local post office, if it was your local post office you can go in with all the mail and shove it right back at them for evidence, online you're on a sticky wicket
Depends on how you set it up, we were told to set up one each and one as a couple, ie Mr Zebo, Mrs Zebo and Mr & Mrs Zebo. Because all the surnames were the same, it didn't cost more. We didn't have problems as I recall.
I think the problem is down to the way redirected mail is handled (although I can't think of a better way to do it).

It goes into a cage for delivery to the address shown on the envelope (the old address). A card is attached to that cage giving details of redirection. The delivery postman looks through his load, takes out any mail for redirection, attaches a sticker showing the new address and puts it back into the postal system.

Usually works well with the regular postie, so I'm told, but errors can occur when he is off sick, on leave, being covered by temporary staff etc.

In my experience it's usually very good, but NOT perfect.

I wonder why the tenants didn't redirect it - or return it to RM if your new address not known to them.

I did it at the post office and had to pay for 2 for me as I get mail in my maiden and married names. The HMRC one was for hubby tho so it shouldn't have been a problem, unless it did state don't redirect it of course.

My new driving license has apparently turned up at the old address today too! Ho hum. I'll have a moan at the PO and see what they say.
I certainly would try. Was it clear on your form about the duration of the redirection (e.g. 3 months, 6 months)?

Hi boxtops, yes as I recall. It costs more for 6 months obvs so I paid the right amount, whatever it was.
hi meglet, any baby news yet?
