'This Russian nonsense' is more suited to The Famous Five or Dick Barton than an everyday story of country folk.
As you have already remarked, mikey, Matt is supposed to be a hardbitten business man who is no stranger to fraud, so the scriptwriters should not have let him be fleeced in a country whose language he does not understand, by someone whom he does not know, and then left him to flounder like a man who is trapped in a quicksand.
As regards making any sense of it all, the lack of answers to your earlier thread suggests that nobody else understands it, either.
