I only joined FB to get the £5 off coupon for Lidl. I keep getting emails asking if I know these people. Some of them I know. To crown it all tonight there was a man from USA. He is the brother of my brothers ex wifes new husband! How can this be right?

I think that is right. I get similar emails asking if I know friends of friends, so it is quite feasible that you would be asked if you know this man, although there are a couple more degrees of separation.

They get access to your contacts through your email. I got myself a throwaway email to join Facebook so there is no link to my contacts. Increasingly offers and competitions require a visit to Facebook.
