It could be that the User Profile has become corrupted.
Are you able to create a new one, with administrator rights?

how do i get into it though? its just the notmal windows logon screen. i cant see any option to make a new one
You can not get even on to the logon screen ? From the description it sounded as if it was just your account it couldn't offer you. You say it goes to the normal sign in window.

Can you not log in as someone else with administrator privileges ?
A colleague dealt with this recently, I'll see if I can talk to him and get back to you.

there are no other accounts on the machine, and it doesnt seem to have an optuon to log in as admin.how can ido it?
I suspect not. It seems to assume you can log on to a corrupt login :-(

no it did help a bit OG -thanks - i tried to get in to safe mode but ended up just doing a system restore - which strangely said it hadn't completed - but then the computer just started up normally and let me log in!
the SR did work and it was a bit slow to start up but everything seems ok now
cant think why it happened - because the link you added also suggests it only happens with temporary accounts... but this is my main one.

i have just made a couple of new accounts just to be on the safe side - i usually have a work account but hadn't set it up again since reformatting the computer a few weeks ago

thanks everyone.
That's a relief, the one my colleague worked on involved hacking into a spare non-administrator account and enabling admin rights.
