Hi, we returned from holiday last week and would like to query one of my sons GCSE results (a critical one for A level course). The results sheet advises that queries have to be made before 31 August through the school. However, the school is not answering the telephone or emails and there is no one on site. I am told that each school has an exams officer, but I am at a loss on how to make contact. Should I contact the exam board?

They should have given you a number for the Exams Officer. Can you go on the school website and find the actual number?
Google the school website, it might be on there. You do of course have the evidence of your Sent emails to show that you did make the email queries before 31 August.

No. The school website does not provide any details. A teachers name is given on the results sheet , but no telephone number. Unfortunately, we were away on the results day, but I would hate to think that that was our only opportunity.
I think it's unlikely anyone would have been in school today on a public holiday. I'd try again tomorrow and Wednesday. Let us know how you get on
I'm sure it isn't, as we were in exactly the same position last year. The school arranged a meeting before the new term and we spoke to them then. Leave a message on their answerphone, in case someone is in during the week. I suppose there's no harm ringing the exam board. They may be able to help.
I've just tried today to help a student get his results, Mr Zippy, because he was away on Thursday and had unwisely assumed the school would post them on so didn't make arrangements for the school to send them to him. But there is no-one around at the school this week and telephone calls and emails just result in a message saying that the school is closed until middle of next week. The school website mentions nothing either about obtaining/querying exam results- in fact it hasn't been updated for 3 months. So I hope your son's school has made better arrangements.
