Scottish Cultures And Laws - Advice.

The BBC Good Morning programme has just warned late summer holiday makers to take care of local laws and customs when travelling. Acts like carrying mineral water into Nigeria, wearing camouflage in Barbados and feeding the pigeons in Venice contravene local laws.

I'm shortly off to Scotland . What advice do folk have for laws and cultures to be aware of north of Hadrian's Wall?

What is a Stovie, wolf ?.

tony - mine came in a ready meal from Tesco. Cooking is not a strong point of mines.

@@ Stovies are a Scottish dish. Recipes and ingredients vary widely, but the dish always contains potatoes and, variously, onions, leftover roast beef, corned beef, minced beef or other meat.

The potatoes are cooked by stewing with fat and stock. To stove means to stew in Scottish. Lard, beef dripping or butter may be used.

It is also common to stew the potatoes in water alone with onion before adding the other ingredients.

I'm in the second camp, wolf. Scotch is an amber liquid, the creation of the devil but rather good tasting when a nice single and then it is/was designed to slur the voice and make you screw your apostrophes up in speech.

For the avoidance of doubt, when talking about stovies there is no singular. A request for a stovie may result in an Aga being delivered to your castle.
With regard to the heretical comment on the cratur, there may be a bad one out there but I've yet to sample it.
Lastly, the only place you need a visa on Scotland is Edinburgh (particularly during the festival). The also take Mastercard, Amex and all debit cards. There is a higher interest rate payable in a reciprocal arrangement for the grief suffered when we try to spend oor poonds doon sooth.

Baldric - I believe that the strange English people eat something called Spam Fritters but never even considered it in Stovies.

Deep fried Mars Bars and Pizza (in batter) make my stomach churn when I think of them too. Tesco usually has Haggis Pizza!

DTC you must eat Cullen Skink when you visit Scotland. Best I have ever tasted was up in Lossiemouth but no doubt other places make it just as well. Fish stew made with cream. Often a starter but IMO a meal in itself.

You completely missed the irony in my post whilst my tongue was planted firmly in my cheek. You may well have missed the comedic talents of other posters on page 1 of the thread (douglas in particular).
Having spent 2 years in a barracks next door to 650 Royal Scots, as a Welshman there was generally a lot of banter between some of them and I.
Referring to them sometimes as Scotch Men, Jock-In-A-Frock or on occasion Oatmeal Savages were just a few instances, whilst I in return was often called Druid, Sheep Sh*gger but more often than not "that f*cking Welsh tw*t", on account of me being in the Royal Military Police.

Well, I know who is not getting best answer for a real tit of a response; shame that Ed doesn't have a worst response box - that may be more revealing to the characters behind their learned contributions than the current 'best reply of excellence'.

However, with this thread, there there is a reply of such munificence and wit, which, IMO, stands out by a country mile (or is that mule, as I first typed).....though, I must add that there have been some cracking AB replies to this theme. So Scotches of your choice all around, the only acceptable mixer being more Scotch.
