What exactly is a lemming, apart from a tiny little thing that loads of computer programmes have been made about?

Lemmings are small rodents (they look a bit like fat rats with a shorter furry tail). They are mammals and live in the Northern hemisphere in the tundra and taiga regions of places such as Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia, Mongolia and Tibet. The real things don't commit mass suicide by jumping off cliffs and they have nothing to do with computers!
