I went to empty my indoor food bin into the outdoor food bin and as I was doing so a maggot fell out!!! I've tried washing the bin out with disinfectant as suggested and spraying fly killer into it but the flies still seem to lay their eggs in MY BIN! AArrgghh
Does anyone else have this problem? How do you deal with it?
I don't recycle much food which is probably why I hardly fill my bin up and it sits there for a few days gathering flies. I put peelings, bones, fat and skin in it mostly. And dried up bits of leftover cat food.
The outside bin needs a good clean. The rim is covered in dried up eggs.
Totally agree with OG on food wastage. If it's remotely edible, it gets eaten in my house, even giblets, which are boiled and given to the dog and cat. I'm wasting nowt ive paid good money for!
Barmaid - why don't you compost egg-shells? We've been doing it on the same compost heap for 37 years and never had a problem. Boxtops - I refuse to recycle fish skin/bones/shellfish shells and chicken bones because why should I buy expensive compostable bags to put them in - and they'd still stink to high heaven and i'd have to disinfect the bin. Sorry - life's too short. I'd rather stuff a mushroom.
