Sociology and social policy

I have a degree in sociology and social policy any ideas on what i can do with this degree. Im looking for a careear not just a dead end job and have no idea what to do, I dont mind studying again but I need to work so it would have to be part time study. Help I just dont know what to do with my life. Im 25 by the way

Why bother doing a degree if you had no plan on what you wanted to do with it? It's a total waste of education , and more to the point you took a place from someone who may well have made use of it.

I personally think that any education is good education even if your not sure what to do with it, life is for learning and so far that is what Tam has done. EVERYONE has the right to education!

The best thing for you to do I guess Tam would be too see a career adviser, although I am not sure if these people are just for school leavers, havent seen one myself for a good 8 years - look into it. Also Check out The Open University website they have loads of info one there with what you can do with a degree etc.. and they have plenty of courses which you can use to 'top up' what you know to help you with a career - very useful site. Also because you have done a degree already you obviously fast track past most of the stipulated courses, you can also get financial help. They have open days for you to go to which have careers advisors there to discuss whats going on and so on. Good luck.

actually Greedyfly, were not talking about basic education here were talking about the level of education where choice plays a fundemental part. The whole point of "further" education is to presumably provide adequate training in the field you hope to make a living from. Sadly some students are advised that any degree is better than no degree, and when chosing a course, take the path of least resistance. That being a course that provides the greatest oportunity for the least amount of work and the most amount of leisure time. Coming out at the end of it with a degree that's as much use to them as a chocolate fire guard. A waste of their time, a waste of the educators time, and a waste of a course place.

From my experience, a lot of people at 18 didn't really know what they wanted to do for the next 40 years of their lives and tended to choose subjects at which either they were adept or where they had a strong, outside interest...

I was once employed by a Director who said to me that the type of Degree didn't matter - it was that I had been 'trained' to use my brain...

It makes no difference, I still feel that we shoul dtake in as much education as we can - whether or not we use it day to day. It teaches you more than the subject.

Would it make a difference if tam1 had paid for the course he/she took themselves?

I'm offering an opinion, it's that simple. Your advice is no better or no worse than the opinion I offered. I'm not missing the point because there isn't a point to be made. Clearly there is no right or wrong.... just opinion!
