I don't know what Russell Harty was doing with the bear, but quite a few of the photos make sense, the bananas on the market stall one will have been taken in the 1950s when bananas arrived back in Britain for the first time since before the war, for years no one saw a banana in Britain.
my mum banged on about bananas and banana splits all during the war when I was a kid, when bananas arrived at last in UK our local Co-op had them first and the queue was lengthy mum gave me the ration books and half a crown in money and said when you get them don't wait till you get home peel it and taste how good it is, what I did not know was the bananas were still green and not ripe and they tasted awful and I went home with tears streaming down my face at the disappointment.
I think picture 39 has a tragic story behind it. A wanna be art critic set fire to the submarine made of old tyres and in the process suffered burns which were fatal.
