I think Alex is the master. She inspires people to improve, whereas Ramsay gets people's backs up. I've only seen one Of Ramsay's shows though; the one where the hotel owner lives in a massive trailer and didn't pay his staff.

I agree completely with Cloverjo.
I think Ramsey does a variation on the "bad cop/good cop" routine.
First, he destroys them by pointing out (in no uncertain terms) how useless/stupid/idiotic they are. Then, when he's reduced them to tears, their self-esteem in tatters, he puts his arm round their shoulders and tells them he only wants to "help" them. All they have to do is agree with everything he's said, and Hey presto! They get a new kitchen/dining room/bedroom makeover and suddenly, everything (including any marital problems they were having) is hunky dory again.
