Shining in the Sky

Hi all,

I woke up at 5 o'clock this morning and when I looked out the window, I saw this shining object in the sky. It was quite low down on the east/south east horizon and was absolutely huge (for a star!). It was the usual white/yellow colour though.

I was wondering if this was a planet, and if so, which one? It was moving at the same rate as the other stars.

Sounds like you may have seen the star Sirius, it was reported in our local paper along with a photo, and both NASA and the Met Office confirmed this! Try looking Sirius up on Google!

Apparently its meant to be the axis of the universe and its where the saying "the dog days of summer" comes from.

Could it have been one of the satellites for communication systems which have been launched in past years? I believe they can glow in the light of the moon and seem to move pretty quickly.
